Cabot Creamery
The Cabot Creamery, home of the "World's Best Cheddar" cheese, got its start back in 1919 when 94 farmers from around Cabot got together and formed the creamery as a co-operative venture. Each of the farmers put up $5 per cow and a cord of wood to fuel the creamery’s boiler. Back then, farming was still pretty inexpensive and most farmers could produce more milk than they could sell. And, Vermont had more cows than people – in 1930 we had 421,000 cows but only 359,000 people.
So to make use of all those cows, the creamery started making cheddar cheese about 1930. And they’ve done well with it since, winning awards along the way. The creamery keeps on growing even as Vermont farms are disappearing.
The Cabot people are proud enough of what they do to give guided tours through the creamery where you can watch the cheese makers at work. You can also taste samples of the great cheddar cheese they make. Tours are given at the Visitor’s Center in Cabot Village. It’s best to call ahead, (800) 837-4261 to find out what they’re up to.
If you can’t make it up to Cabot, they’ve got the Cabot Annex Store over to Waterbury. You can’t watch them making the cheese there, but there’s plenty of cheese to eat.
